During the COVID-19 pandemic, interest in chicken coops suddenly rose – self-sufficiency and high-quality regional produce are in demand. In response to a specific request from a cyclist, Martin Mühlböck, who is just as keen on cycling, designed another huhn.raum model in addition to the three existing models. The flexible, sporty chicken.velo with bicycle tires and “yellow jersey” contains everything that makes a chicken’s heart beat faster – a sitting perch for 4 chickens, laying nests, a sand bath and a removable tent roof to provide shade. The chicken keeper will be delighted with the simple egg removal, uncomplicated cleaning and supply of feed via hinged doors that can be opened from the outside. With the solar-powered electronic gatekeeper including twilight switch, the chickens can also be left alone for a few days.

In 2017, Martin Mühlböck recognized a gap in the market in his search for his own stylish chicken coop and decided to hold a competition with the University of Art and Design Linz for the artistic design of a mobile chicken coop.
The competition was for the design of a mobile chicken house for the species-appropriate keeping of 3-6 chickens with high design standards and intelligent execution. The quality of the projects submitted was outstanding.
The jury was made up of Prof. Frank Louis, Vice-Rector for Teaching at the University of Art and Design Linz, Thomas Gumpenberger, Federal Poultry Division Chairman of the Breeders’ Association of Austrian Small Breeders (RÖK) and competition organizer Martin Mühlböck.
The team led by Sophia Eder, Stefan Ebner, Jakob Bramer and Stefan Schneider won the competition with their “ChickenCube” model. The jury was impressed by the idea of the collapsible run grid with lifting handle, which allows the chicken coop to be repositioned quickly and easily.
Second place went to Sebastian Berger, Verena Ernst and Hubert Streicher with their “Hedwig” model with yellow wheels and a wheelbarrow-style wheel.
Third place went to the model “Die Hühnerarche” by the team Birgit Loipl, Nikolaus Gmoser and Renée Chvatal, which has the chicken sitting in the cabin like a captain.
All three designs are characterized by the fact that the eggs can be removed and the coop can be maintained and cleaned (manure tray, etc.) from the outside and can be moved on wheels so that the turf is not damaged even in small gardens.
The chicken houses were presented for the first time on Saturday, 24.6.2017 with live chickens, which were visibly happy, as two eggs were laid after just a few hours.
Chicken houses of this type will be available from mühlböck küche.raum in future.
